Netherlands to Close Cannabis Coffee Shops to Tourists

Apparently the dutch hate tourist money and want to drive drugs out to the streets instead of the safety of a taxed coffee shop. This is so stupid.

From WireUpdate.com:

In an effort to stop drug tourism, the Dutch government on Friday decided to restrict access to cannabis coffee shops so that tourists will no longer be able to buy the drugs.

Coffee shops are establishments in the Netherlands where the sale of cannabis for personal consumption by the public is tolerated by the local authorities. As this is illegal in most countries, many tourists from around the world travel to Amsterdam to use cannabis.

But in an effort to reduce criminal behavior and tourism as a result of the drug policy, the Dutch government on Friday decided to introduce a membership system for coffee shops. The city of Amsterdam, where most tourists go, is against the decision.

The new system will require members of coffee shops to be a citizen of the Netherlands and over the age of 18. “The coalition agreement says that the current open door policy of coffee shops should be stopped and that the fight against organized drug crime should be intensified,” the Dutch cabinet said in a statement.

The new laws will require coffee shops to become closed clubs for the local market, meaning that only Dutch citizens will be allowed access if they are able to show a valid ID and have a membership of the coffee shop in question.

The membership will be in the form of a club card which can be provided by coffee shop owners if those who want to be a customer can produce a valid ID and proof that he or she lives in the Netherlands. The membership will be for a period of at least a year, but coffee shops will be restricted in the number of club cards they can issue.

Vermont Passes Single-Payer Healthcare Law! The First State in the U.S. Where “…health care will be a right and not a privilege.”

From CBSNews.com:

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin on Thursday signed into law a bill establishing a single-payer health care plan for the state, making Vermont the first state to do so. Shumlin lauded the legislation as an “economic and fiscal imperative” — as well as a moral one.

“This law recognizes an economic and fiscal imperative – that we must control the growth in health care costs that are putting families at economic risk and making it harder for small employers to do business,” he said in a Thursday statement. “We have a moral imperative to fix this problem, with 47,000 Vermonters uninsured and another 150,000 underinsured and worried about how to afford keeping their families healthy.”

Vermont lawmakers passed the legislation in March by a 92-49 margin. At the time of its passage, Shumlin lauded the legislature for becoming “the first state in the country to make the first substantive step to deliver a health care system where health care will be a right and not a privilege.”

The legislation, when fully enacted, will guarantee every Vermont resident the right to enroll in a state-sponsored insurance plan, Green Mountain Care.

It’s the end of an era. The decade which opened with a ferocious attack in the United States of America, closes with the announcement of the death of its greatest and most conveniently disney-like villain, Osama Bin Laden. In a decade which has been dominated by the Empire Strikes Back, our affable and dextrous host Robert Foster invites us to scrutinize the events shrouding the killing of this twentyfirst-century Goldstein.

Joining him in this May retrospective are Rap News regulars, General Baxter, the Pentagon’s most effusive spokesperson, attempting uncharacteristically to stay ‘on message’, and his counterpart from the world of alternative academia, the conspiracy industry’s favorite son, Terrence Moonseed. What actually happened in Abbotabad?

Do the public have a right to see evidence of this event? What is Terrence wearing on his head? Was justice really served? What next? History is happening.

69 Year Old Now Serving Jail Time for Growing 2 Pot Plants for his Cancer Stricken Wife

From FOX8.com:

A Medina County senior citizen is sentenced to jail time for cultivating marijuana that he says was medicinal for his wife with cancer.

Friday, 69-year-old Gary Burton was sentenced to 60 days in jail, 30 days house arrest and two years probation, with credit for time served. Burton was arrested in January for cultivating marijuana in excess of 1,000 grams, which is a third degree felony. But some argue that Burton’s reason for committing the crime far outweighs the law.

“He was just trying to take care of me, the best way he knew how,” says a tearful Sherri Burton, Gary’s wife of 44 years. Sherri suffers from depression and anxiety, and was diagnosed with breast cancer that has now spread to her lymph nodes. The diagnosis was a major blow to the couple.

“If I didn’t have Gary there to hang onto me and hold me and say ‘it’s okay,’ I probably wouldn’t have gotten through a lot of those days,” Sherri says. But she says Gary wanted to ease her fear and pain with something natural that he could provide on his own. “[The marijuana has] helped me in sleeping at night. Even though I’m on other medication, it’s helped me to relax and not be consumed by the cancer,” Sherri explains.

The couple planted two marijuana plants in a secluded spot in their own Chippewa Lake back yard. Sherri says they chose to grow their own because they wanted it to be pure and free of chemicals.

Gary is now serving his sentence at the Medina County Jail–a sentence some consider to be lenient, but to Sherri, it might as well be a lifetime. “I don’t even want to think about the next 60 days. I don’t even want to think about tomorrow,” she says.

Their vow was ‘in sickness and in health,’ but with Gary behind bars, Sherri will have to endure her next two months of treatment alone. “I refuse to go for surgery unless he’s by my side. I need him by my side,” she says. “We just want to relax and enjoy what time we have left, and who knows how long that will be. Nobody knows.”

Now Sherri want to public to understand one thing. “Marijuana is not as evil or bad as they think it is,” she says. “They need to keep an open mind, and someday, they may need it themselves.” The couple hasn’t had health insurance since Gary retired several years ago.

It’s possible they may also lose their social security benefits while Gary is behind bars.

A Drive Through the Exclusion Zone: Fukushima Nuclear Plant, Japan

The Japanese government has issued the evacuation order on March 12 for the residents living within the 20 kilometer radius of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Since then, residents have left their homes, and the “no man land” has been out of touch with the rest of the world.

A Japanese journalist, Tetsuo Jimbo, ventured through the evacuation zone last Sunday, and filed the following video report.

He says that, inside the evacuation zone, homes, building, roads and bridges, which were torn down by Tsunami, are left completely untouched, and the herd of cattle and pet dogs, left behind by the owners, wonders around the town while the radiation level remains far beyond legal limits.
