  1. Well, now I know–I can leave the nasty MSG out (that stuff has seriously bad side effects for many people) and make me some good fried chicken! I wouldn’t mind getting a bucket of KFC now and then, except the MSG makes me wheeze and have stomach problems better neither imagined nor described.

    • PirateNo Gravatar says:

Actually, that’s not true. MSG is widely used worldwide as a flavor enhancer and received a bad rap in the US when it was associated with Chinese food. The FDA found that reports of illness from MSG were actually caused by poorly cooked food and there was no correlation between MSG and any side effects (thus why MSG wasn’t banned). But, by that time, the damage was done. MSG had a bad rap that was over publicized and dramatized. Same thing that happened with Toyota a few years ago – turns out there really wasn’t a brake issue – there was a 24 hour media publicity issue.

You should Google yourself; you’d see a picture of a retard. MSG is in all kinds of food: “roquefort cheese, parmesan cheese, soy sauce, walnuts, fresh tomato juice, grape juice, peas, mushrooms, broccoli, tomatoes, mushrooms, oysters, corn, potatoes, chicken, mackerel, beef, eggs, and human milk.” The taste for it was brought back by American soldiers after WWII. Your equating MSG to aspartame is ridiculous. MSG has been around forever: aspartame has not. Your pseudo-science spawned attitude is so typically American.

Also, people who eat MSG tend to eat less, so your assumption that MSG makes people fat is totally erroneous. By your logic the entire continent of Asia should drop into the Earth’s crust from the weight of all those fat Asians with headaches.

Read the China Study book on obesity and food causes. It is not all on the internet. Your doctor may be willing to discuss these issues with you. It is not naturally produced MSG, it is the adulterated opposite twisted version of the protien that only occurs in manufactured versions of MSG that act a a neurotoxin. The normal, left twisted protien is easily handled by your body. Same with the fake sugars.

        • Did you see the Dr Oz episode describe the massive average weight gain of amercian woman since 1946. talk about fat Mama, the grand kids are destined to be even larger. We were just wondering what ingredients went into the KFC chicken recipe. Get a life. That goes for the rest of you freaks too.

        • No Gravatar says:

Your body actually produces tens of times more glutamates (the non-salt ingredient in MSG) in a day than you would eat if you ate KFC 3 times a day. Double-blind tests have shown people eating food they believed had MSG in it and developing the “symptoms”, only to be shown that what they ate actually contained no MSG and that they were being delusional. MSG might not taste very good (in my opinion) but it’s not hurting you.

        • LizNo Gravatar says:

Yep, the FDA says that if there is no discernible reaction in 1/2 hour then there is no issue.
It often takes at least an hour to get an Aspartame headache.
I have seen MSG reactions that last as long as or don’t even show until as much as 48 hours later. Yes, these observations are repeatable. There are many studies done on this, but the food lobby has way more money. Try MSGtruth.org and MSGmyth.com

      • CherylchrissNo Gravatar says:

I have found out that since MSG is a wheat based food, people with Celiac Disease and wheat allergies can get very sick from it, as with soy sauce and other condiments with wheat as an ingredient.

        • PippieNo Gravatar says:

MSG occurs naturally in a lot of foods, including soy sauce (explaining the sensitivity to it as well). It’s more of an intolerance than an allergy. Some MSG is corn based, resulting in people who have a corn intolerance to have stomach issues to it.

        • HawkeyeNo Gravatar says:

No MSG is not wheat based. MSG additives are made from sugar beet, corn sugar or sugar cane. Not wheat. Soy sauce has MSG AND wheat based products and therin lies your reaction to soy sauce and other condiments such as teriyaki and chilli sauces. MSG additive is exactly that – an additive. In a bid for people to eat healthier additives are given a bad name due to some people having reactions to them. Celiacs cannot consume gluten yet others can. Gluten isn’t given a bad name because it has been handled correctly and correctly diagnosed. MSG intolerance depends on the individual response to it as does gluten in my humble opinion. Japan is the healthiest country in the world and funnily enough. It is where MSG was born. They use it alot and being some of the healthiest and slimmest people in the world (due to other reasons than MSG of course) it hasn’t damaged their health or caused mass scale obesity through the country either. America (the biggest and best example) was a prosperous and rich coutry after the second world war. This prosperity extended to everything and as alot of people moved there to get some prosperity of their own. The amount of food americans consume is staggering compared to other nations and as such this gorging is what causes obesity and not things such as additives and MSG. MSG causes side effects not obesity! The side effects don’t cause obesity either. Over indulging is. Look at the average portion size of anything in America compared to Japan and you will be amazed. Americans eat that much today because they know no different. A bag of crisps has always been that size as has a pizza so why would they do any different. Things are bigger because there is plenty to go around (Or was before recessions and financial troubles etc.) and has been for quite sometime. If the manufacturers of food stuffs decreased portion sizes and made them just a little more expensive people would eat less due to not being able to afford to and as such people wouldn’t starve but consume safer levels and thus become used to it again over time. Buy a bag of crisps in England and a bag in America and it is a noticable difference as is the sizes of things like pizza, restaurant meals etc. England consume more than is needed too hence obesity happening too. People in Africa eat very little and they still survive and have little to no body fat to sustain them either. Yes they struggle too – alot. But eating somewhere in between. Like Japan. Is the way to beat obesity. America was just an example. Not all people in America are fat and they have some of the best medical facilities and statistics in the world and also some of the fittest and best athletes too. Just to state that I am not attacking the American nation. I am stating fact as I see it. MSG is in many things in it’s natural state and as such in safe levels is safe to consume. If you eat too much MSG in it’s raw form you will feel the known side effects more easily but thats what they are – side effects which your body experiences for a period of time, not forever. Japan and china consume masses of it and are ok with it. KFC is a bad company. Its methods of production get bad press accross the board but the cooking and ingredients make a great tasting product and when cooked well is fantastic. That is why they are global and a market leader. I will continue to eat KFC and MSG in moderate amounts like everything I consume. So should everyone else in my opinion. On the subject of glutamate it may not be essential but it is natural and consuming it has been natural in many guises for as long as the human race has been deemed a civilised one. I went way off topic and came back again. The recipe tastes great from KFC and at home too. Try it with a tsp of mustard powder and a tsp of coriander powder (preferably seeds ground fresh – both). A nice rounded natural umami flavour with those additions! ENJOY we don’t live forever. If you’ve already indulged more than you should in one thing and destroyed the balance in your life – go without for a while and re balance yourself. The key to a good life is everything you enjoy do in moderation and for everthing you do enjoy do something that is just good for you!

Ummm, the FDA is government run (aka corrupted) agency that lets so many toxic chemicals in our skin and mouths it’s sickening. MSG is most certainly a toxin. The FDA could give you study results & professional opinions that drinking gasoline is perfectly fine too, if they had the incentive or instruction to do so.

There are far more dangerous things than MSG. Get a reliable source of info and not some quacks on the internet who hold so called degrees and diplomas.

Actually, for the first time in a long time my generation (born 1987-1992) is expected to have a decrease in the average age of mortality.

Also, I am not concerned with MSG as a toxin, but you need to be aware that it’s being used against you in a very deceitful way. MSG may be naturally occurring, and if the chemical wasn’t being artificially created in a lab I wouldn’t have a problem with it. MSG in it’s natural state gives a flavor that seems to tie the other flavors together. This is very essential to eastern food culture such as Thai who try to incorporate all five tastes into every meal.

MSG is produced in America as a food additive. Why? Because MSG prevents hormones in your stomach from telling your brain that it is full. Normally it takes 30 minutes for your brain to register that your stomach is full, unless you’ve eaten cruciferous vegetables that may cause bloating or gas.

This is an affect that I have noticed consistently with snack foods. I’ve eaten potato chips and wondered why I suddenly lost all care for moderation. Normally I eat small portions throughout the day, but certain junk foods alter how I think while I’m eating. Every single time this has happened I’ve checked the ingredients and sure enough monosodium glutamate was one of the first half of items on the ingredient list.

MSG will not make you fat, and it will not likely affect your heart and blood pressure. However, it IS a conduit for increased consumption which CAN cause obesity and increased blood pressure.

We do not live in a country that actively cares for our health. We are a capitalist country, not a democracy. If something seems funny, you will always find a paper trail in America. If people will buy it, someone will sell it. That is the backbone of our country as we now stand. The FDA can no longer be trusted to protect you, please see Kevin’s Law which is trying to be passed, the aftermath of the Jack-in-the-box e. Coli breakout. The FDA has been stripped of all power from the Congressmen who were former elites in the industrial agriculture we now rely so heavily on. This is what has allowed HFCS to enter into every food, these former CEOs and board members have allowed their old companies to receive government subsidation to sell their products below production value. Corn and soybeans are Americas new cash crop and the by-products are being poured into the American diet to ensure they remain a prosperous crop. Power companies like Monsanto are out to preserve their own wealth and they bear no concern for what they leave in their wake.

This original post was bound to bring controversy. It’s our first amendment right to fight for what we believe in, especially something as passionate about our health. The fact that so many people are in an uproar shows that more and more people are waking up to the lies we are fed by the industrial agriculture companies. We used to preach to the children to “Wake up!” about the problems. I’m glad to say more people have woken up, but now it’s time to get out of bed and actually fight for organic, sustainable farming. Fight for artificial flavors and colors to be removed. Fight to feed our cattle natural food, not corn. And we need to fight with a sense of moderation in our diet and stop buying these foods. This is a CAPITALIST country, if we stop giving them our money then they have no power

Wake up. Get out of bed. Tell the world your sick of it’s shit.

I tend to avoid MSG after a “bad trip” from eating at a Vietnamese-Cambodian restaurant. The lunch started with large bowls of soup, evidently loaded with MSG. I spent the next five hours back at the office feeling like was going to climb the walls — like a crazy mix of too much caffeine and a good measure of psychosis thrown in. MSG is known as “Aji no Moto” in Japan. It is so widely used that Japanese, as a nation, are chronically on the verge of psychosis. You really don’t know what you’re talking about, Pirate.

  3. cunt of sortsNo Gravatar says:

the reason KFC tastes so good is not ebcause of the 11 herbs and spices. it’s because of the process it’s been through. it is first deep fried in a pressure cooker, then battered, and then frozen, then deep fried again before serving.

    • CLLNo Gravatar says:

Actually, as a former KFC employee, I have to say: The chicken comes fresh from whoever the company buys the chicken from (goldkist in my area’s case), and is stored in cases in a walk-in refridgerator. From there, it is battered, and pressure fried. From the frier, it goes to a warmer to wait to be served to the customers. The regular bone-in chicken is not frozen at any point during the process. The strips, on the other hand, arrive marinated and frozen. They are not frozen after being fried, and nothing is battered post-frying.

    • Tony R.No Gravatar says:

Actually, it’s a pressure FRYER, not a pressure COOKER. There are significant differences in construction, and the seals are made to withstand high temperature oil, at much higher temperatures than the seals of an ordinary pressure cooker. If you value your life, DON’T try to pressure fry chicken in your average Presto Industries home pressure cooker!!

    • Rockstar1160No Gravatar says:

No, accually its not, i work for KFC and Its fresh chicken, not frozen and not already battered, It’s First battered, Then Pressure cooked one time before serving, and it’s finger lickin’ good

    • JjaNo Gravatar says:

You can’t be allergic to MSG because that would mean you’re allergic to Glutamate, which is an essential amino acid needed for living things to function.

      • RnbrinegNo Gravatar says:

Some people have allergic skin reactions to water, so I wouldn’t be surprised that some people are also allergic to MSG.

      • No Gravatar says:

Glutamic acid is a non-essential amino acid, not an essential one. But you’re right that you can’t be allergic to it. Though you could be sensitive to it. Some bodies don’t work properly, and have a hard time converting it to a usable form.

  16. WmLeeNo Gravatar says:

So… what’s the source of this “recipe leak”? Someone just threw this up on the internet as the secret recipe and everyone believes it? Really?

    • Tony R.No Gravatar says:

Maybe someone paid to have a sample analyzed by a laboratory. It would be easy enough to do. The spice mix comes from a central warehouse in sealed packets, ready to use, and it wouldn’t be hard at all to get a cooperative KFC employee to provide a few grams. On the other hand, I have a friend who worked at KFC, and he claimed the secret spice mix was nothing more than salt, black pepper and MSG, and that the “11 herbs and spices” thing was just a gimmick to throw the competition off the scent. Maybe it was 11 herbs and spices originally when Harlan Sanders developed his recipe, but I can see greedy corporate management simplifying it to save money. MSG is a flavor enhancer, and it can mask a lot of mediocre cooking.
      .

      • I work in an analytical lab and it’s not that easy.  Contrary to what the public watches on CSI, sample analysis is as much art as science.  You don’t just throw it on, hit a button, and have a PERFECT answer in 15 seconds.

Food analysis will give basic chemicals, but but the separation techniques involved, time, etc. could easily put an analysis like this into the $10,000′s range.  A good chef could taste it and tell most if not all of what is in it.  Saw a “Hell’s Kitchen” episode where there was Minestrone soup and each person had to taste and identify what they could.  One person got something like 8/10 ingredients, so it can be done.

        • Jay FieldsNo Gravatar says:

    • HawkeyeNo Gravatar says:

I think the process of pressure frying matters greatly in the taste and most importantly the texture of the batter. Thats what makes the crust so much thicker than when using a normal fryer. Pressure frying is a very recent technique. This means they can cook quicker from fresh in house and not use part cooked frozen produce. I think the recipe will have been the same just the mothod has evolved with cuisine.

      • BengweeNo Gravatar says:

I think the chicken was cook using electrical pressure cooker and today they are using gas pressure cooker to reduce cost of production. The chicken parts used today is also different as in the 70s. The recipe use today could be the same as before.

Watched a TV show on the history behind KFC and they claim to use exactly the same secret recipe that the Colonel used, which today is kept in a vault with a list and 11 tubes of the herbs and spices. • auron123No Gravatar says:

Actually it depends on what you are cooking, i know for a fact the original recipe chicken is cooked at 166 degrees celcius if you were cooking 2head of chicken which is 18 pieces of chicken and is cooked for 14 minutes in the fryer
