Accidental Photobomb Leads to Bag Thief’s Capture

From Gizmodo.com:

These well-dressed folks are the Myers Family and they’ve got a Canon G7 camera with quite possibly the best timing in the world. Why? Well, just take a closer look at what’s going on in the background of this photo:

We were taking pictures outside the Capitol building and I wanted to get a timed shot of the whole family all dressed up. So I put my bag down, placed the camera on a wall, got everyone to line up, set the timer for ten seconds, and jumped into the photo. I took a quick look at the image and liked it.
We then started to walk away when I realized my bag was missing. I went inside the building to see if someone had turned it in, but no luck. I ran outside and circled the building, but still no luck.
I then realized that I might have caught the thief on camera and I checked the shot again. When I saw the guy with his hand in my bag, I ran back inside and found the Capitol Police. They were amazing. They immediately sent out a description of the thief using the photo I took. In a few minutes, one officer had found him still in the area. The thief had dumped some things from the bag in a nearby trash can—the flash for my camera, a small backpack of kids toys, a bag of cables, extra SD cards, my mini tripod—but still in my bag were my wallet with cash, credit cards, hotel keys, rental car keys, and my iPad.
The Police recovered everything and hauled the guy off to jail.

In the recording, the woman spots the Manns’ four-year-old rescue cat Lola and strokes it tenderly before suddenly grabbing her by the scruff of the neck and calmly dumping her in a trash can — then closes the lid and walks away.

Rabid Elderly Folk Attack Videographer

From YouTube.com:

What should have been uneventful incident free coverage of a nonprofit group’s annual open meeting, which was held in a public facility. Turned violent when an individual described as a “soldier” for the organization attacked a Photojournalist from behind.

Unknown to those in the room, including the Photojournalist, another Journalist deployed his Kodak “Instamatic” pocket camera and proceeded to; in his own words “capture a crime in progress” on video. That video has been intercut with the video from the Photojournalist’s Betacam and is being made available on You Tube for the public to view.

After the attack members of the La Habra Heights Improvement Association claimed it was a “private meeting”. Even though two Journalists were asked to sign the guest sheet prior to the meeting and were never asked to leave. One Journalist was even offered cookies and lemonade. Responding law enforcement affirmed the public’s right to be there.

Charges are pending an investigation by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.

Caught on Tape: NY Cop Beats Iraq War Veteran With Baton

From SkyNews:

Shocking video footage of a New York City policeman repeatedly clubbing an Iraq war veteran with a baton has been shown to jurors.

Walter Harvin, 28, was left covered in blood and bruises from more than 20 blows to his upper body during the beating in July 2008.
Officer David London, 45, had confronted the war vet as Mr Harvin tried to enter his mother’s building without a key.

The policeman was clearing an obstruction to a jammed-open door, when Mr Harvin walked past him and into the lobby.

The security camera footage shows London and the war vet arguing, as Mr Harvin steps towards a lift.
Suddenly, the officer and the war vet shove each other. London quickly pulls out his baton and hits Mr Harvin’s face.

The policeman continues to rain down blows, as the former soldier crumples to the ground. The footage from a second camera shows Mr Harvin trying to protect his head with an arm, while married father-of-three London batters him.

Mr Harvin’s uncle Earl Jones, 55, told the New York Post newspaper: “People need to see it (the video) so they can see how cops treat people.” The alleged victim suffered more kicks and baton strikes after he was handcuffed, it is claimed. He is said to have been hit about 15 to 20 times.

Prosecutors, at a Manhattan Supreme Court trial into the beating, say London then filed paperwork falsely claiming Mr Harvin had attacked him. But the officer’s lawyer insists the silent security video did not record verbal threats the war vet had made and that his client used justifiable force to subdue him. Initial resisting arrest and disorderly conduct charges against Mr Harvin, who is reportedly suffering from post-traumatic stress, were later dropped.

London denies assaulting the war vet and lying to cover up the attack. The trial continues.
